How I practice w/ Nature
This was me when when I first learned about biomimicry 🤯
I love Biomimicry Institute's definition:
Biomimicry is a practice that learns from & mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges — & find hope along the way.
Whenever I return to the philosophies of biomimicry, I feel a profound resonance within my body. A type of deep exhale combined with "Of course this is true."
For the past decade+ I've explored how biomimicry can inform my life, my practice, & my work. My practice of biomimicry typically involves slowing down, getting really quiet, & taking the time to witness nature in all of its glorious forms.
When I'm in a state of growth & experiencing the accompanying discomfort, I look to nature. When a seed grows to a seedling, it must first EXPLODE. My human guess is that this has got to be uncomfortable. So then I remember that explosions of discomfort are a necessary part of natural growth.
When I seek to enact change in my life, I look to nature. Every 29-ish days the Moon cycles from New to waxing to Full to waning & back to New. The Moon phases remind me that we are all constantly in cycles of change. This is not because we are broken & need to be fixed. The Moon reminds me it's natural to cycle between inner contemplation & outer action.
When I crave some activated energy in my life, I look to nature. For me fire represents transformation, transmutation, power, & passion. I think about the ancient sequoias & their relationship to fire. I get curious about fire energy in my own life & out in the world: What needs fire in order to grow anew?
I love the creative curiosity biomimicry requires of me, while at the same time grounding me deep into our interconnected truth: I am nature. You are nature. Together with the elements, the Moon, the stars, the Sun, the trees, the rocks, & all the Beings, we are Nature.
