Songs of our ancestors
My best friends were found on the dance floor & music continues to strengthen our bonds.
My 20’s & 30’s were dedicated to the creation of music festivals & watching the sun rise over a huge stack of speakers.
Music is what drops me into the ritual vibe.
Music wakes me up in the morning & chills me out in the evenings.
I’ve got a playlist for washing my hair, another for cooking dinner with my partner, & one for when I have focused work to complete.
Music is also a way I connect to my ancestors, in particular my Gramma.
I watched my first musical with Gramma (Sound of Music) & as we sang along to every song, she would tell me tales of singing with her mom in the style of Do-Re-Mi.
I even went to my first musical stage production with her (Hello, Dolly!), which I’m pretty sure was a gateway to my love of costuming & adornment!
Every time Que Sera Sera plays, I still tear up thinking about Gramma singing along with such gusto.
As I’ve mentioned in recent Witchy Wednesdays, this is a potent time of year to connect with ancestors.
I invite you to play with music as a vehicle for connection.
How might music be a bridge to connecting to your ancestors & other wisdom keepers of the past?
What can we learn about our ancestors through the music of their era?
What can we ask of our current relations (blood &/or chosen) about their musical tastes?*
How can this knowledge support our understanding of Self?
As with any practice, but especially with ancestor work: It’s OK if, & when, emotions arise. Connecting with our lineage is deep work.
If now is not the time for you to explore, that’s OK.
Our ancestors are ready when we are.
