The rituals the Land told us to do
I began to study the witch archetype in 2009 & I soon discovered the witch's connection to nature, a concept that resonated strongly with me.
In her book, The Earth Path, Starhawk explains her definition of a witch:
A Witch must not only be familiar with the mystic planes of existence beyond the physical realm; she should also be familiar with the trees & plants & birds & animals of her own backyard, be able to name them, know their uses & habits & what part each plays in the whole.
Reading this for the first time created a moment where everything in my life made sense. The experiences I was drawn to & the choices I'd made now all had connection.
From that moment on I had a path to follow that brought together Ecologist Meghan & Sacred Meghan.
So how do we become "familiar with the trees & plants & birds & animals of [our] own backyard, be able to name them, know their uses & habits & what part each plays in the whole?"
Before purchasing guide books & calling upon ornithologist friends, I believe the first step involves setting intention & slowing down.
First acknowledge that developing a relationship with the Land is important & desirable. Explore your "whys."
What do you seek to know, to remember, &/or to understand as a result of deepening your relationship to the Land?
Find the words that sum up your desire. This is your intention.
Then, pause.
There is nothing you need to do, no actions that "should" be completed.
Breathe. Pause. Breathe again.
Continue to return to your intention throughout the week & throughout your day. Bring yourself back to your desired relationship with the Land.
Then pause & breathe. Practice slowing down.
The Land, the elements, the Moon, the birds - they will all be ready when you are. There is no rush to this practice.
