What can Thanksgiving teach us?
Here in the States, we're preparing for the annual Thanksgiving holiday. A day typically reserved for eating lots of food & sharing what you're thankful for.
As a kid in the 1980's this holiday was all about "Pilgrims & Indians," hand turkey drawings, & a warped understanding of what actually happened.
Now we're stepping into an era of decolonization.
As a nation, this includes recognizing how gross Christopher Columbus actually was & acknowledging we live on occupied land.
Personally, the practice of decolonizing my life begins with accepting I've internalized white supremacy.
Decolonizing your life begins within.
Decolonization requires honest examination of privilege, willingness to make mistakes, & dedication to unlearn what we've been taught so we can do things differently.
Even though decolonizing your life is a personal process, it doesn't mean it's a process you have to do on your own.
Seek out support, learn from those who are living different experiences from you, & join in the conversation with your peers. This is a team effort!
A few resources that have supported me on this journey:
These resources have changed my perspective & increased my awareness - & as I wrote last week: from awareness comes change.
